What is coenzyme Q10?Coenzyme Q10 (also known as ubiqinone) is a vitamin like substance which plays a vital role in the bodys energy supply mechanism, acting in conjunction with enzymes (hence the name coenzyme Q10) to convert sugars and fat into energy. Coenzyme Q10 is also important as an antioxidant within the body. Coenzyme quinones occur in several chemical forms, with coenzyme Q10 being the only form found in human tissues.
The human body is able to synthesize (in the liver) a limited amount of coenzyme Q10, with the remainder being obtained from the diet. Rich sources of coenzyme Q10 include fish (mackerel, salmon, sardines) and nuts. Under normal circumstances, the body is able to maintain adequate levels of coenzyme Q10. However, coenzyme Q10 levels decrease with age, and are depleted by intense physical exercise or illness. Coenzyme Q10 levels are also depleted in paients prescribed cholesterol-lowering statin drugs.
What does coenzyme Q10 do?
Coenzyme Q10 is an essential cofactor of enzymes involved in the energy production process. Coenzyme Q10 is stored in mitochondria, structures found

The generally recommended intake for coenzyme Q10 is 30 to 200mg/day, taken with meals, to enhance absorption.
Are there adverse effects from taking Coenzyme Q10?
Coenzyme Q10 is generally well tolerated, with no serious adverse effects reported in long term use. Very rarely, individuals may experience gastrointestinal disturbance. There are no known toxic effects, and coenzyme Q10 cannot be overdosed. Coenzyme Q10 is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women, in whom the effects of coenzyme Q10 have not been extensively studied. No significant interference of coenzyme Q10 with other drugs has been reported.

What are statins?
Statins are a class of cholesterol-lowering drugs that work by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is plays a central role in the liver’s synthesis of cholesterol. Randomized clinical trials (RCT) show that statins are most effective when given to patients who already suffer from cardiovascular disease (CVD). They are, however, also widely used without CVD but who suffer from elevated cholesterol levels and/or other risk factors like diabetes and hypertension. There are many different types of statins, some with a more potent LDL-lowering effect than others.
How do statins work?
Statins inhibit the enzyme HGM-CoA reductase and its ability to produce mevalonate, which is an intermediate product in the multi-step synthesis of cholesterol. In what is often referred to as the mevalonate pathway, mevalonate would under normal circumstances undergo a number of biochemical transformations, eventually causing it to branch into several different compounds, including cholesterol and ubiquinone. Statins effectively block this process.
Q10 and Cholesterol
Since coenzyme Q10 and cholesterol are both synthesized from the same substance, mevalonate, this implies that if the body's production of cholesterol is reduced by a statin, the body's production of coenzyme Q10 is reduced accordingly.
Coenzyme Q10 has multiple effects on the body's cholesterol level. Coenzyme Q10 will lower the body's cholesterol levels marginally. In addition, the antioxidant effect of Q10 will prevent circulating cholesterol from oxidizing and becoming very harmful.
