Vitamin K2 is a fat-soluble vitamin which is important in the maintenance of normal bone health, cardiovascular health and normal blood clotting. Being active in the body for longer vitmain K1, K2 is able to reach more tissue and activate proteins that have a role in keeping calcium, mobile.

As Vitamin K is so important for bone health it makes sense to take this as part of your daily supplementation programme especially if you are postmenopausal.

What is the best form of Vitamin K to take?

Vitamin K2 is available in several forms such as menaquinone-4 (MK-4) and menaquinone-7 (MK-7).

The type of vitamin K used in Bio-Vitamin K2 is MK-7 and is the most effective- it is more easily absorbed from the digestive tract, is retained longer within the body, reaches more bodily tissues, and has greater metabolic action.

Bio-Vitamin K2 is derived from natural plant materials via a patented organic process. This results in a 100% nature identical K2 MK-7 that is free of common allergens. Bio-Vitamin K2 is 100% trans (the biologically active MK-7 form), whereas MK-7 produced via fermentation processes can be a mix of both trans and the inactive cis forms.

As a fat soluble vitamin, Bio-Vitamin K2 comes in small and easy to swallow oil capsules so that the supplement can be reliably consumed with the necessary fats for improved absorption.

What does vitamin K2 do?

K2 has an essential role in keeping calcium 'mobile' in the body (and it does this by activating various proteins). K dependant proteins can help ensure that calcium is deposited into bones, not into blood vessels. Calcium deposited into bones can contribute to bone health and structure, whereas calcium deposited into blood vessels can contribute to calcification- a hardening of the arteries associated with various cardiovascular health issues.

Who would benefit from K2?

K2 may prove beneficial to anyone who wants to help take care of their bone health and circulatory health, while most of us require extra K2 for optimum health. Nutritional exerts suggest that a significant proportion of the UK population may have insufficient levels of K2. K2 levels required to maintain normal blood clotting may not be enough to maintain healthy bone or blood vessels.

Vitamin K deficiency can result from poor diet, alcoholism, malabsorption disorders, ageing, and certain medicines. In particular, vitamin K2 levels may be depleted by the use of statins. Inadequate vitamin K2 is associated with osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease (tissue calcification), and abnormal blood clotting.

How much should you take?

Pharma Nord recommends 1-2 capsules per day, with each capsule containing 75mcg of vitamin K2 or as your health professional advises.

There is no Nutritional Reference Value for vitamin K2. The dosage range above has been used in many randomised controlled clinical trial studies, which have established the efficacy and safety of vitamin K2.

Are there any adverse effects from taking vitamin K2?

People prescribed blood thinning medications such as warfarin should seek medical advice before taking supplemental vitamin K2.
